We are often asked by DIYers and apprentice carpenters, “Do you have any chisels you would recommend?” I am often asked by DIYers, apprentice carpenters, and others, “Do you have any recommended chisels?
However, a chisel for professional use costs more than 10,000 yen per piece.
This may be a little too expensive for a first chisel.
So, I searched various chisels sold on Amazon and bought the one that looked the best for a trial.
I actually used it.
I bought this chisel from Amazon for ¥3,800.
As it turns out, it is more than sharp enough and durable enough.
I intentionally hit the knots in the video, but they did not chip off easily.
I can’t believe that you can buy this for ¥3,800. It is terribly cost-effective.
Which size (width) should I buy?
If you go with a set of chisels, which is a complete set, it is usually about 10 pieces.
However, it will be tough to get this many chisels out of the blue.

If I’m doing carpentry work, ideally I want three of them
I recommend 9mm, 21mm, and 42mm.
If you have these three, I think you will be able to manage the processing of the joints and the interior construction.
If I only buy one bottle?
Either 21mm or 24mm is recommended.
The reason is that a mortise hole is generally 30mm. When digging a mortise hole from scratch, a 30mm chisel is too tight for a 30mm hole.
Therefore, a 21mm or 24mm chisel, which is one size smaller than 30mm, is useful for remodeling.
What about the second one?
For the second one, I think 9mm is good.
Wide holes can be drilled with a small chisel, but small holes cannot be drilled with a large chisel.
Therefore, 9mm is good for the second chisel.
What about the third one?
It is 42mm.
Actually, I use the 42mm the most.
The 42mm is very convenient.
But I can’t work without 24,9mm chisels.
If you have chisels up to 42mm, your work will be easier and DIY will be more enjoyable.
